Tips on how to burglar-proof homes

Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation in its Anti House-In brochure states that residential burglary is one of the most frequently reported crime cases although it’s also the most preventable. Here are tips on how to safeguard your home :-

  • Install extra safety gadgets or system such as iron grilles, key-operated locks or alarms for doors and windows (fix a door viewer on the main door).
  • Lock all doors, windows and gate when leaving home and during nightime.
  • Lock up ladders, tools and equipment to prevent intruders from using them to enter your house.
  • Do not keep large amount of cash and valuables at home. Keep cash in banks and expensive jewellery safe deposit box.
  • Seal holes to prevent intruders from using them to enter your house.
  • Trim overgrown tree branches, bushes and shrubs along the perimeter fencing regulary to prevent intruders from using them to enter or hide in your compound.
  • Do not leave house keys in flower pots or under the door mat, bring them with you.
  • Keep dogs or geese as pets to help guard your house.
  • Verify identification of any personel who claim to be public officers before letting them enter your house.
  • Maintain good relationship with your neighbours.
  • Keep an eye out for each other.
  • Make sure only you or your family members posses the house keys, especially if you just moved into a new place. Change to new mortise lock, preferably with deadbolt feature i.e key is needed to lock and unlock the door.
